  1. On this album, Marsh proves to be an excellent leader. His authority is clear, he really swings, his phrasing is relaxed, his tone is beautiful, round and deep, but sometimes also with a welcome edge, and his ideas are fluid and intelligent. This is a truly fine album by 4/5(4).
  2. The great tenor stylist Warne Marsh is backed by his star pupil pianist Susan Chen, bassist George Mraz and drummer Akira Tana for this Storyville CD. To Chen's credit, she chose not to closely emulate Lennie Tristano and instead was developing her own bop-based style. Marsh continued the old Tristano practice of disguising standards as renamed originals but there are some surprising moments.
  3. Originally on a Vanguard LP, it was in fact Brown's date, came out under his name, Marsh no more than a bystander and adviver. A further move away from Tritano's influence, less convolution, though the two noted above, by Ball, and Marsh's "Long Gone", set up more thematic obstacle-courses.
  4. Tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh(), a disciple of the Lennie Tristano school, recorded this excellent album in New York City on December 12, & January 16, with Ronnie Ball(piano); Paul Chambers(bass) & Philly Joe Jones or Paul Motian(drums)/5(8).
  5. Warne Marsh Quintet: Jazz Exchange Vol. 1, is a live album by saxophonist Warne Marsh 's Quintet featuring Lee Konitz and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen which was recorded at the Jazzhus Montmartre in late and released on the Dutch Storyville label.
  6. Apogee plays in a hard-bop format you almost never hear any more: saxophonists Marsh and Christleib screaming twin tenors in a quintet with piano (Lou Levy), bass (Jim Hughart) and drums (Nick Ceroli), immensely aided by several loose yet tight arrangements by Joe Roccisano. Of course, you almost never heard this format when Apogee was originally released in , either.
